Increased Elastin Content in the Vaginal Wall of Postmenopausal Women with Pelvic Organ Prolapse

چکیده

Hypothesis / aims of study Changes in elastin content have been linked to the pathophysiology of pelvic organ prolapse (POP), however it is unclear whether the elastin content is increased [1] or decreased [2,3]. Such discrepancies could be attributed to differences in biopsy site, kind of analysis and/or patient population. Our study is the first to perform an extended biochemical analysis of different elastin features in tissues from the anterior vaginal wall of postmenopausal Caucasian women with and without POP. We aimed to compare elastin content, cross-linking, post-translational modification, and enzymatic degradation profiles of the (normal) precervical region and the prolapsed anterior vaginal wall tissues of women with POP. These data were compared to tissues from the precervical anterior vaginal wall of controls without prolapse to identify features specific to POP in the different parameters evaluated.

Vaginal Fibroblastic Cells from Women with Pelvic Organ Prolapse Produce Matrices with Increased Stiffness and Collagen Content

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is characterised by the weakening of the pelvic floor support tissues, and often by subsequent prolapse of the bladder outside the body, i.e. cystocele. The bladder is kept in place by the anterior vaginal wall which consists of a dense extracellular matrix rich in collagen content that is maintained and remodelled by fibroblastic cells, i.e. fibroblasts and myofibro...

Biomechanical properties and associated collagen composition in vaginal tissue of women with pelvic organ prolapse.

PURPOSE The pelvic tissue of women with pelvic organ prolapse is stiffer than that of controls but there are scant data on the collagen composition that corresponds to these mechanical properties. We evaluated human vaginal wall stiffness using the novel scanning haptic microscope and correlated these measurements to collagen expression in women with and without pelvic organ prolapse. In this s...

Effects of pueraria root (pueraria radix) on the content of collagen and elastin in pelvic floor dysfunction patients

This study was performed to investigate the effects of Pueraria radix, the root of a legume Pueraria lobata (Wild.), on the content of collagen and elastin and discuss its role in treating patients with pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD). This prospective, multi-center, and randomized study was performed on postmenopausal women diagnosed with PFD planning to undergo vaginal hysterectomy. Included p...

Transvaginal Sacrospinous Ligament Fixation for Pelvic Organ Prolapse Stage III and Stage IV Uterovaginal and Vault Prolapse

The result of transvaginal sacrospinous ligament fixation technique, as part of the vaginal repair procedure for massive uterovaginal (Pelvic Organ Prolapse stage III and stage IV and vault prolapse) is evaluated. A total of 32 women were included in the present case series. Marked uterovaginal prolapse was present in 28 women and four had vault prolapse following hysterectomy. Patients with va...
